Crucial Western Conference clash is in the USL Game of the Week spotlight Wednesday night

SAN ANTONIO – The USL Game of the Week heads to Toyota Field on Wednesday night for what shapes up as one of the biggest games of Week 20 in the 2018 USL regular season with San Antonio FC playing host to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

With both teams fighting for a place in the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs, here are three reasons you should tune into ESPNU on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET.

1. HIGH STAKES FOR SWITCHBACKS

No team has played more games in the league so far this season than Colorado Springs, which has only 12 games remaining as it sits in the eighth and final playoff position in the West. That means the side must run up as many wins as possible in its final third of the season to stave off the threat of being overtaken by the sides sitting with games in hand outside the playoff positions right now, of which San Antonio is one.

“Games are coming thick and fast now,” said Switchbacks forward Marty Maybin after his side’s victory this past Saturday against Tulsa Roughnecks FC. “Now we need to take what we did against Tulsa on the road. We’re a good team, and we showed that tonight. We needed to win and we’re all glad we got it and we want this same feeling at the end of our trip.”

2. SAFE HANDS

San Antonio FC’s Diego Restrepo hasn’t put up quite the numbers he did a season ago in claiming the USL Goalkeeper of the Year honors, but the shot-stopper is consistently capable of pulling of the big save at the big moment that makes him great viewing for everyone except opposing attackers. With 56 saves this season, Restrepo ranks sixth in the league and he’ll be aiming to put in another big shift for the hosts on Wednesday night.

3. FIRING OFF FINISHES

Admittedly, neither Colorado Springs nor San Antonio are among the highest-scoring attacks in the league. And while it’s certainly beyond reason to hope we might get something along the lines of July 11’s goalfest between OKC Energy FC and Las Vegas Lights FC on Wednesday night – even with both teams having put up four goals apiece on Saturday night – where both sides can definitely make up for it is in the quality of finishes they can produce.

That reel doesn’t even include Ever Guzman’s roulette from this past Saturday night for San Antonio against Real Monarchs SLC that quickly spread across Twitter and beyond. So, tune in. There’s a decent chance someone’s going to do something memorable.
