FENTON, Mo. – Saint Louis FC claims the second meeting of the season against the defending Western Conference champions Swope Park Rangers, earning a 2-0 victory at Toyota Stadium – Saint Louis on Saturday evening. Joey Calistri and Corey Hertzog each scored their second goal of the season to lead the home side to its fourth win of the campaign. Albert Dikwa, who caused problems all night long for the Rangers, went to the ground just inside the penalty area in the 25th minute, and center official Michael Radchuk pointed to the spot. Corey Hertzog confidently stepped up and finished moments later. That goal proved to be the game-winning tally, and the home side had several great opportunities throughout the match to add to the score line. Hertzog had a shot careen off the left post and back into play in the 65th minute, while Dikwa missed on an open-net opportunity moments earlier. However, Calistri finally found the back of the net in the 77th minute, hitting a right-footed blast by Rangers goalkeeper Adrián Zendejas. With the result, Saint Louis improves to 4-4-5 on the year, while the Rangers fall to 5-3-4 this campaign.

Scoring:
26’ – STL – Corey Hertzog (Penalty Kick)
77’ – STL – Joey Calistri (Kyle Greig)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Saint Louis’ winless run comes to an end in impressive fashion. The team’s last win came against OKC Energy FC on April 21, as the team record three draws and fell to LA Galaxy II, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Phoenix Rising FC from April 28 through May 30. For the first time this season, Saint Louis beat an opponent by more than one goal, and it was also just the second time the team has scored more than one goal.
  • 2. The Rangers have been brilliant at home but average on the road so far this season. Swope Park is undefeated at home, having recorded wins against Seattle Sounders FC 2, Switchbacks FC and Phoenix Rising FC, but the team has struggled to produce similar results away from Children’s Mercy Park. The Rangers are now 2-3-3 on the road and have been shut out in two consecutive away contests, having played Rio Grande Valley FC to a 0-0 draw on May 19.
  • 3. Jake Fenlason has been the go-to guy in goal for Saint Louis thus far, but Tomás Gómez turned in a solid shift, recording his first clean sheet of the season. With Gómez’s performance on Saturday, Saint Louis has recorded five shutouts this season, with Fenlason posting clean sheets against Switchbacks FC, Los Dos, Energy FC and most recently against Portland Timbers 2 on May 5. Gómez made two saves on the night and recorded one clearance and one punch to help his side secure victory.
