SAFC Returns to Action in U.S. Open Cup Play on Wednesday

San Antonio FC (3-2-5) tied Tulsa Roughnecks FC (0-4-6) 1-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. An early goal from Omar Gordon earned the team a point at home in front of 7,502 fans.

“We haven’t lost (in five matches), but if you go in the locker room you’ll find players that are disappointed,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We didn’t lose tonight, but we have a passionate group of players, which is very important, and every time they play and step on the field they have the desire to win.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the seventh minute when captain Ryan Roushandel sent a long ball to defender Greg Cochrane down the left flank. Cochrane crossed the ball into the box, where midfielder Omar Gordon buried a shot past goalkeeper Fabian Cerda for the 1-0 lead.

The goal marked the first of the season for Gordon and second overall for the club in USL play. Gordon also scored on Wednesday in the team’s first U.S. Open Cup match at Midland Odessa Sockers FC. The assist marked the first of the season and seventh overall for Cochrane since joining the club prior to its 2016 inaugural season.

The Roughnecks then leveled the score in the 51st minute after forward Joaquin Rivas collected the ball at the top of the box and beat goalkeeper Diego Restrepo from distance to equalize.

The draw extends the Alamo City club’s unbeaten streak to five matches in USL play. SAFC is 3-0-3 since April 22, when they earned a 0-0 draw at Fresno FC.

San Antonio FC will return to action in just four days as the club hosts Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Toyota Field in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The club will then return to USL action on Saturday, May 26 as it visits Reno 1868 FC.
