Gallagher's second-half tally cancels out Heinemann’s first Penn goal

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – A first goal of the season for Tommy Heinemann was not enough for Penn FC as ATL UTD 2 hit back in the second half for a 1-1 draw at Coolray Field on Sunday afternoon. Things were even through the opening stages of the first half with both sides fighting for possession but neither side able to really take charge of the match. In the 31st minute, Penn broke the deadlock after a perfect squared header found Heinemann, who was left in too much space which allowed him to curl a finish perfectly out of the reach of the goalkeeper to cap a brilliant counterattack. Atlanta came out from halftime determined to equalize and in the 63rd minute got on level terms as midfielder Lagos Kunga ran wide and sent in a cross to the far post for fellow midfielder Jon Gallagher, whose delicate header was perfectly positioned as it bounced off the post and in. Atlanta's goal spurred Penn on to try and find a second, and a first win of the season, but a mix of strong defending by the hosts and wayward finishing by the visitors meant Penn would have to wait for its first win of 2018.

Scoring
31’ – PEN – Tommy Heinemann (Richard Menjivar)
63’ – ATL – Jon Gallagher (Lagos Kunga)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Few teams have managed to average more than 50 percent of possession in each game to start the season but ATL UTD 2 finds itself as one of those teams. The hosts controlled the tempo for much of the game with 58.1 percent of the ball, which proved vital in getting them back into the match.

  • 2. Penn is still looking for its first win of the regular season after its first three matches, but despite that the side  has been creating plenty of chances. What needs to follow next is turning those chances into goals, with the side sitting last in the USL in shooting accuracy. That trend continued in this match with a shooting accuracy of only 25 percent.

  • 3. Despite failing to win again promising signs are there, as Penn is starting to click and find where it is strongest. On this occasion that was in the air, as the visitors won the majority aerial duels, winning 60 percent of the aerial contests as Tommy Heinemann's presence in leading the line added a different element to the club's attack.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:

Richie Menjivar, Penn FC – Menjivar was strong throughout the game, creating four chances, one of which got him the assist on the opening goal. Menjivar also contributed defensively, getting back to cover, making three tackles and claiming two interceptions in a comprehensive two-way performance.
