COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced on Tuesday the club had signed forward Tobenna Uzo, a member of the Premier Development League’s Top Prospects list. The signing is pending league and USSF approval.
Uzo trained with the Switchbacks early this season before joining the PDL’s Myrtle Beach Mutiny in the spring, where he scored 13 goals and added three assists in 14 appearances for the club. Uzo was named to the 2017 PDL All-League Team for his performance, and was also selected as the No. 9 prospect in the league.
"[Uzo] is a big target player that can score with his head as well as his feet, so it is something different that we have not had at that position," said Switchbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "I expect him to come in and help us the rest of the season and help get us into the playoffs."
Prior to joining Myrtle Beach, Uzo had been selected in the Fourth Round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City SC after performing strongly for Coastal Carolina University. In his senior year he made 18 appearances for the Chanticleers, and led the team to an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Uzo was named to the All-Big South First Team and was twice named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.
"First of all I want to thank my Lord and savior Jesus because this is one of my biggest accomplishments in life; it truly is a blessing," said Uzo. "I want to also thank my family, friends, and coaches for constantly telling me to believe that I can be a professional soccer player. I honestly wouldn't want to play with any other group of guys. They all have treated me like family and I hope to do whatever it takes to help this team win games."
The Switchbacks return to action this Saturday against Sacramento Republic FC at Papa Murphy's Park.
