TAMPA, Fla. – Phoenix Rising FC forward Didier Drogba has won the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 20 of the 2017 season, as his perfectly-placed free kick finish for Rising FC that shocked LA Galaxy II Saturday night took top spot in the weekly online poll.
Drogba’s highlight finish came just 12 minutes into the match at the Stubhub Center, as Galaxy II keeper Clement Diop was unable to prevent the long-range strike from reaching the back of the net. With the tally, the former Ivory Coast international has now bagged a team-leading five goals in nine appearances for Rising FC this season and picked up his first game-winner in the process as Phoenix inched closer to the playoff line with its second road victory of the year.
Drogba’s goal earned 46 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Richmond Kickers midfielder Raul Gonzalez finished second with 29 percent for his bending shot from the top of the box against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds last Saturday, while OKC Energy FC’s Alex Dixon took third with 13 percent for his right-footed rocket to the corner of the net against first-place Real Monarchs SLC.
