Pair of goals set stage for U20 World Cup win against Honduras

CHEONAN, Korea Republic – Recent Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 signing Myer Bevan made a big impact for New Zealand at the FIFA U20 World Cup on Thursday night at the Cheonan Sports Complex as he scored twice, including the opening goal inside the opening minute, in the All Whites’ 3-1 victory against Honduras.

The win moved New Zealand into second place in Group E ahead of its closing game against group-leader France on Sunday.

Bevan had a solid performance in New Zealand’s opening 0-0 draw with Vietnam on Monday, and against Honduras broke the offside trap to run in alone on the right side inside the opening minute. Bevan unleashed a fierce strike as he entered the penalty area that caromed off the underside of the crossbar and in at the near post.

New Zealand added to its lead in the 23rd minute as Hunter Ashworth flicked home a free kick with a looping header, but Honduras pulled a goal back five minutes into the second half as Jorge Alvarez found the net. Bevan’s second of the night, from the penalty spot, in the 56th minute restored New Zealand’s two-goal lead, and the All Whites saw out the victory to move into a strong position to advance to the knockout stage.

Bevan signed with WFC2 prior to the kickoff of the FIFA U20 World Cup and is expected to join up with the team following its conclusion. The contest also saw another current USL player in action, as the New York Red Bulls II’s Douglas Martinez made the start and was substituted in the 90th minute.
