TUKWILA, Wash. – Irvin Parra scored both goals as Seattle Sounders FC 2 earned a 2-0 victory against the Portland Timbers 2 on Friday night at Starfire Stadium. Seattle got an early lead from the penalty spot after Irvin Parra was brought down in the area, and Parra converted low into the left corner from the spot. Portland had a good chance to level just past the half-hour mark, but Augustine Williams sent his header wide from the top of the six-yard area. S2 doubled its lead seven minutes into the second half, when Parra’s challenge on T2 defender Rennico Clarke 35 yards from goal flew over Portland goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh and into the open net. Portland tried to get back into the game in the final half-hour, but chances that fell to Russell Cicerone and Williams missed the target, and a late rebound finish by Lucas Cini was ruled offside, as S2 preserved its ninth win in 10 regular-season meetings between the clubs all-time.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Irvin Parra didn’t have a spectacular performance for S2 on Friday night, but he proved the man of the hour in the two decisive moments that decided the game at Starfire Stadium. Parra was brought down for a penalty, and then buried his finish into the left corner to give S2 the early lead, and then created his own luck to add a second seven minutes after the halftime break. On a night when little went right for his opponents, things went right just enough for Parra.

  • 2. Friday night’s victory for S2 was also its ninth in 10 regular-season contest between the two Cascadia rivals in the USL regular season since the start of their histories prior to the 2015 USL season. Almost as importantly, it earned S2 its fourth victory of the season so far, and moved the club into the top eight in the Western Conference. S2’s back-to-back victories to get back to an even 4-4-0 record haven’t always been pretty, but the side is starting to look effective enough to contend for a second postseason berth in three seasons.

  • 3. At this point of the season, T2 must be wondering what entity it must have angered to get the remarkable bad luck it has so far this season. Seattle’s second goal on Friday night was another gut-punch for Portland, as Irvin Parra’s pressuring effort saw his challenge not only knock possession away from Rennico Clarke, but also over T2 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh and into the right corner of the net from 35 yards. The travails Portland has gone through – Lucas Cini being ruled offside on the rebound of a shot off the crossbar by Villyan Bijev offering an exclamation point – may be hard to shake as the season moves on into its second quarter. Man of the Match
