New Mexico United earned its first win in club history on Wednesday night as the expansion side defeated Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Isotopes Park. The win is the first by an expansion side in 2019 and sees United remain unbeaten through three games and temporarily move into second place in the Western Conference ahead of the weekend slate.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Beginning with a fury, New Mexico United scored twice in 13 minutes to put Roughnecks FC in a hole in the first half. The hosts scored just seven minutes in after Tulsa goalkeeper Sean Lewis could not parry a shot from midfielder Manny Padilla to safety and left New Mexico native Devon Sandoval with a tap-in on the doorstep. In the 20th minute, it was in-form midfielder Santi Moar who captured NMU’s second of the night after stepping his way through the penalty area before firing high past Lewis into the top-left corner for his third goal in as many games. The scene shifted in the second half as the Roughnecks created more chances and eventually saw one pay off right at the hour-mark. Following a corner, Roughnecks defender Luca Lobo lashed home an effort from close range to pop up on the scoresheet again. The goal was good for a commendable third in two games to go joint-top the league scoring charts alongside Moar. But though the visitors saw more of the ball and the lion’s share of the chances, NMU goalkeeper Cody Mizell came up big on a couple of occasions to help preserve his team’s lead and the first three-point outing in the Troy Lesesne era.
