Overview of the United Soccer League

The United Soccer League (USL) is the heartbeat of American soccer. Impacting more than 200 communities across the United States, the USL is the first and only soccer organization in the United States to build a youth-to-professional pathway for both men and women within one ecosystem. That structure includes three professional leagues: USL Super League (women), USL Championship (men), and USL League One (men); two pre-professional leagues: USL League Two (men) and the USL W League (women); and two youth platforms: USL Academy and USL Youth.

Authentic, vital, and exciting, the USL is dedicated to providing an inclusive and memorable soccer experience for players, fans, and communities across our growing "soccer nation."

Program Purpose

Under the direction and guidance of USL Mentors, the USL Work Experience Program (UWEP) provides students with the unique opportunity to gain practical sport management experience in a professional sports league setting.  By working on various strategic projects and initiatives, UWEP participants gain hands-on experience with league staff as well as its member teams.  While participants will spend the majority of their time supporting their designated department, they will also have the opportunity to work with all league departments across the entire organization, including club services, communications, operations, media, business development, digital services, analytics, and more. The ultimate goal of USL’s Work Experience Program is to provide participants with well-rounded and practical experience within the sports industry.

FAQ

Do I have to currently be enrolled in school to participate?

Yes, you must receive credit(s) from an accredited College or University in order to participate in the USL’s UWEP. The USL does not require a minimum or maximum number of credits to be awarded for participation, this is determined by the University or College based on the students’ academic program.

What are the time frames for the program?

The UWEP program will coincide with Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. The program’s start and end dates will be based on your specific University or College’s semester schedule.

What is the application process?

UWEP opportunities are typically posted two months prior to the start of a semester. You must apply through the USL’s TeamWork Online platform to be considered for an opportunity. A USL Mentor will review your application and if you meet the minimum qualifications and your interests and goals align with the UWEP opportunity, a member of USL will contact you to discuss the opportunity further.

Due to vast interest and limited availability, we always encourage students to continue to apply for other opportunities for which they are qualified, including other opportunities within the UWEP Program.

May I apply for multiple UWEP opportunities?

Yes, absolutely! Due to vast interest and limited availability, we encourage you to submit your application to any of the UWEP opportunities for which you are qualified and that align with your career interests.

Do I have to be a Sport Business or Sport Management major to apply?

No, we encourage all majors and program specialties to apply.

Where is the USL Work Experience Program located?

The USL League Office is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Currently, the UWEP program offers a combination of fully remote and hybrid opportunities.

Several of USL's Member Clubs also offer Work Experience Programs/Internships. For more information regarding those, please review opportunities on TeamWork Online's platform or reach out directly to that Club's contact identified on the post.
