Club’s Second-Leading Scorer Returns to SAFC for 2018 Season

San Antonio FC has re-signed midfielder and Texas native Kris Tyrpak for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Tyrpak joined SAFC prior to the 2017 season and appeared in 26 USL regular season matches, starting 24 and compiling 1,980 minutes. The midfielder ranked second on the team in goals (six) and was tied for second in assists (three), while also recording the second-most shots on the team (38). Tyrpak scored the fastest goal in SAFC history after putting one in the back of the net in the second minute against Orange County SC at Toyota Field on August 5. He also had his first goal against the Tulsa Roughnecks on May 17 featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.

“We’re looking forward to having Kris with us again,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He scored some impactful goals in his first season here and we’re looking forward to him improving on that in 2018. We’re excited to have Kris and the rest of the squad here for the start of training camp in the coming weeks.”

Tyrpak spent the 2016 season with USL club Swope Park Rangers where he helped lead his team to the USL Cup after securing the Western Conference Championship. Tyrpak scored seven goals and recorded one assist in 28 games (1,751 minutes) with Swope that season before adding three goals and an assist in 225 minutes over three playoff matches. The 24-year-old also previously spent time in the Alamo City with the now-defunct San Antonio Scorpions (NASL) in 2015. Tyrpak scored two goals in just six matches (516 minutes) with the Scorpions.

Originally from Dripping Springs, Tyrpak was drafted by Chivas USA (MLS) in the third round (40th overall) of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He made nine appearances for Chivas, scoring one goal and recording an assist before being selected by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2014 MLS Dispersal Draft following the folding of Chivas USA. Following his stint with San Jose, Tyrpak signed with the Austin Aztex (USL) where he scored nine goals in 27 appearances.

“I’m excited to come back and play in front of the best fans in the USL,” said Tyrpak. “We have some unfinished business from last year, and we will work hard to bring a trophy to San Antonio this season. I can’t wait for the challenge ahead.”

Tyrpak attended Houston Baptist University, playing four years of collegiate soccer for the Huskies from 2010-13. Following his senior season with HBU where he scored five goals and recorded seven assists, Tyrpak was named to the Western Athletic Conference First Team. Following his freshman season in 2010, he was named Athletic Soccer Conference Rookie of the Year. During his time in college, Tyrpak played in his first stint with the Austin Aztex (PDL) where he scored 19 goals in 27 appearances from 2012-13 and was named USL PDL MVP in 2013 after leading the Aztex to a PDL championship.
