Former First Round Selection joins Steel FC to anchor defense

For the third consecutive day, Bethlehem Steel FC has added to its roster with today’s signing of defender Brandon Aubrey. The Missouri native joins Steel FC after spending the past season with Toronto FC and its USL affiliate, Toronto FC II. The move is pending league and federation approval.

“We are really happy with Brandon joining us and he brings some really valuable experience from a highly successful club,” Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke said. “With his age we believe that he deserves a good look and we’re happy to be the club that gives him that look. We expect him to anchor our defense because we’re a very young team and could get even younger this season so it’s very valuable to us to have young players that already have experience in the USL.”

A native of Plano, Texas, Aubrey was selected in the first round, 21st overall, by Toronto in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. During his first professional season, he made 21 appearances as a defender with Toronto FC II. Appearing in 21 matches, Aubrey played 1,781 minutes, the fourth-most on the USL squad. During his time on the pitch, Aubrey was a defensive anchor as he led the team in clearances (121), interceptions (82) and blocks (22) while conceding only 23 fouls. Along with his defensive skills, the 22-year-old completed 77 percent of his 800 passes in 2017.

Aubrey honed his skills for four year at Notre Dame, earning NSCAA All-American Third Team honors in his senior season with the Fighting Irish. During the 2016 season, Aubrey led the squad to the NCAA Third Round with both his defensive and offensive leadership. Starting in all 21 matches in the central defense, Aubrey tallied a career-high nine goals on 13 official shot attempts. A member of the 2013 NCAA Championship Team, Aubrey notched 76 appearances and contributed to 52 victories while in South Bend, IN.

With the signing of Aubrey, Steel FC’s current roster sits at eight players after the club signed forward Brandon Allen and midfielder Omar Holness earlier this week.
