Early goal set stage for important road win in playoff chase

CARSON, Calif. – Phoenix Rising FC took a comfortable 2-0 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night, but after the game there was only one thing most people were talking about.

Didier Drogba’s 13th-minute free kick from almost 40 yards out into the top-right corner of the net quickly circled the globe, providing another vintage moment from the former Ivory Coast international.

“These are the things you need to try,” said Drogba. “Obviously, when you try it, there’s more chance for you to score, but this is something that you work on in training.”

Drogba’s spectacular finish provided the sparkle, but the victory that snapped a two-game losing streak was an essential one for Phoenix as it looks to earn its first playoff berth in club history. The win puts Rising FC in good position to do so, as it sits a point out of the playoff places after Saturday night’s action with 14 games still to play in the season.

The win against a Galaxy II side that entered on a four-game undefeated streak of its own hit the mark for Rising FC, as they notched 15 shots, six of which were on target, despite being out-passed by a 2-1 ratio by the hosts.

“I’m really proud of the boys. How we worked today was fantastic, and I’m really happy with the result,” said Drogba.

The game was also a big one for the night’s other goal-scorer, Alessandro Riggi, who came back for his first start after an early-season injury had seen a long layoff and recovery. Working diligently over the 90 minutes, Riggi recorded four shots overall, created two scoring chances and put away a good finish in the final minute of the first half that cemented Rising FC’s advantage.

“It’s crucial,” said Riggi. “From the coaching staff to my mentors on the team – from Drogba to Shaun [Wright-Phillips] to everybody else – it just helps. It helps you out coming back from an injury they just help you out and tell you what to do, and if you listen the magic happens.”

Phoenix continues its road trip next Saturday night when it visits Rio Grande Valley FC, a side that currently sits below it in the Western Conference standings. Another road victory before what will be a crucial return trip to face Orange County SC would be another big boost for Drogba and his teammates.

“I’m happy to be on the field, and to be with these guys,” said Drogba. “We’re having fun together.”
