Forward brings experience from Liga MX’s Monarcas Morelia

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Friday the club had signed Mexican-American forward Ever Guzman for the rest of the 2017 USL season, pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Guzman joins the club after spending his previous 10-plus years as a professional in the first and second divisions of Mexico.

Guzman brings experience to SAFC from Liga MX in Mexico, where he has spent time with Monarcas Morelia since 2004. The 29-year-old most recently spent time playing for Correcaminos UAT in Ascenso MX where he scored 10 goals in 16 appearances from 2015-17.

“We are looking forward to having Ever join the squad,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He comes with a good pedigree having played at a very high level. He has come into training and shown some good qualities both with and without the ball, and we are excited to have him here in San Antonio.”

Guzman arrived in the professional limelight after he helped lead the Mexico U17 National Team to victory at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru in 2005. Playing alongside the likes of Carlos Vela and Giovanni Dos Santos, Guzman finished with the second-most goals in the tournament (four), and scored the third and final goal in the 3-0 win over Brazil in the final. The Moroleon native was joined in that tournament by SAFC teammate Cesar Elizondo who represented Costa Rica in Peru that year.

“This is an incredible opportunity in my career,” said Guzman. “My goal is to leave it all on the pitch game after game to show my gratitude towards this great club and its fans for giving me this chance.”

The forward made his professional debut for Monarcas Morelia in 2004, and went on to make 79 appearances for the club in the last 13 years, scoring 10 goals. Guzman has also spent time with six different clubs within Liga MX and Ascenso MX, including Veracruz and two different spells with Venados FC.

In total, Guzman has appeared in eight matches with his country between the U-17 and U-23 levels, scoring five goals. Guzman has also claimed a club championship, winning the 2013 Apertura Copa MX Final with Morelia after the Monarcas won on penalty kicks following a 3-3 draw with Atlas.
