Cincinnati to host Chicago Fire, Sacramento to visit LA Galaxy in late June

CHICAGO – The USL’s FC Cincinnati and Sacramento Republic learned their opponents for the Fifth Round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Thursday morning, with Cincinnati being drawn to host four-time Open Cup champion the Chicago Fire at Nippert Stadium, and Republic FC going on the road to play the LA Galaxy in their first games at this stage of the tournament.

Buoyed by an Open Cup-record crowd of 30,160 fans at Nippert Stadium on Wednesday night, FCC earned a 1-0 victory against Columbus Crew SC in the Fourth Round behind Djiby Fall’s third goal of the tournament. Fall sits in a six-way tie for the tournament lead, and will look to add to his tally as Cincinnati plays host to the Fire, which took a 1-0 victory on the road against Saint Louis FC on Wednesday night to advance.

Sacramento also advanced to the Fifth Round for the first time thanks to an impressive 4-1 victory against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 11,569 at Papa Murphy’s Park. Republic FC will now get to face the Galaxy for the first time in the competition, having previously squared off twice with the San Jose Earthquakes in the tournament. With Republic FC and the Galaxy II having shared a fierce rivalry over the past three seasons in the USL, the draw adds a new wrinkle to the matchup.
