RICHMOND, Va. – George Davis IV converted a second-half penalty kick as Louisville City FC earned a 1-0 victory against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday in front of a crowd of 7,603 at City Stadium. Davis’ 81st-minute PK was also the former Kicker’s 40th career goal. He is tied for third all-time with Charlotte Independence midfielder Jorge Herrera and behind Reno 1868 FC’s Dane Kelly (50) and retired Kickers striker Matthew Delicate (42). With the win, Louisville improves to 2-0-1 (7 points) overall and 2-0-0 on the road. Richmond drops to 1-2-0 (3 points) and suffers its first home defeat. Louisville moves to 3-0-2 all-time against Richmond, and it is the club’s first win at City Stadium after playing to a draw during the 2015 and 2016 meetings.

Scoring:
81’ – RIC – George Davis IV (penalty)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes when City FC finally put a mark on the score sheet. The opportunity came shortly after a Louisville corner kick, which was initially cleared by Richmond’s Chris Durkin. However, the follow-up shot struck Durkin who was called for a handball, and George Davis IV was called upon to take the subsequent penalty kick. Davis hesitated and hit a rolling shot inside the right post for the 1-0 lead in the 81st minute, and the tally held up the rest of the way.

  • 2. Louisville exuded some patience in the attack, with at times some heavy horizontal distribution as Richmond’s defense and midfield sagged back on numerous occasions. That led to a roughly 60-40 percentage Louisville advantage possession-wise for large stretches. Some of City FC’s strongest attacking sequences were on the left side. Former Kicker George Davis IV had one of the better chances in the 40th minute as he nearly slotted the ball past Richmond goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky, who got down in the nick of time. The ball popped out briefly and he covered up to halt Louisville.

  • 3. The Kickers demonstrated a nice moment in honor of former player and club academy coach Kofi Nti. Twenty minutes into the match, fans stood up and clapped in unison of Nti, who wore No. 20 during his Kickers tenure and suddenly passed away on March 26. Among the crowd was also a “#20 Kofi” banner in Nti’s remembrance. The Kickers community contributed donations to assist the transport of his remains to his native Ghana.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:
Brian Ownby, Louisville City FC –
In both halves, Ownby generated two of the better scoring chances in a game that had lacked high-quality opportunities for much of the 90-minute span.
