VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 got goals either side of halftime by Deklan Wynne and Ryan Dhillon as it took a 2-0 victory against the University of British Columbia on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium.

The 'Caps worked their way into the match early as they found their rhythm, while UBC was very much up for the challenge. WFC2’s David Norman Jr. had the best opportunity early on when he made a great effort in the sixth minute to get his leg on a free kick, but could only hit the crossbar.

The first goal of the match came on 20 minutes off the foot of Wynne, as the New Zealand national team member weaved through a crowd in the penalty area before firing a perfect shot to the far post to make it 1-0.

WFC2 goalkeeper Mark Village was called into action for one big save in the first half, rushing off his line to stop a breakaway for the Thunderbirds.

After five substitutions for WFC2, a cagey second half saw Vancouver add another goal in the 78th minute. Norman fed Residency striker Gloire Amanda in the penalty area, and after his shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, trialist Ryan Dhillon from Simon Fraser University delicately chipped the rebound over a crowd of players for a 2-0 final score.

"I'm really pleased," said WFC2 Head Coach Rich Fagan. "It was a good exercise. UBC are a good team and have had good seasons in recent years. They have a strong team and I think we've done well with our young group as we start to build chemistry."

WFC2 plays its second preseason match next Friday, March 10 against Simon Fraser University at 7 p.m. PT at Fox Field. They follow that with a Wednesday, March 15 preseason affair against the FVSL All-Stars, kicking off at 7 p.m. PT at Port Moody Town Centre.
