Estudiantes de la Plata news and notes
Estudiantes was edged out by Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a penalty shootout in its opening game last Sunday after the two teams had played to a 1-1 draw through regulation.
Elias Umeres gave Estudiantes the lead against Leverkusen, but the sending off of Rodrigo Brana just before halftime tilted the game in the Germans’ favor.
Goalkeeper Mariano Andujar had a positive display, saving a penalty kick by Mexico international Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez in the first half.
Estudiates will resume its Primera Division campaign on February 5 when it visits Velez Sarsfield.
Clube Esporte Bahia news and notes
Bahia also fell to German opposition in a penalty shootout in its first game of the tournament, losing to VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 after the teams had finished scoreless after 90 minutes on Thursday night.
The Brazilians held the advantage in the shootout through three rounds, but missed efforts by Renato Caja and Feijao saw Wolfsburg rally for victory.
Bahia’s leading scorer a season ago, Hernane, was held relatively quiet by the youthful Wolfsburg defense, and will be aiming to break through on Sunday.
Bahia’s next contest comes against Fortaleza in the Copa Do Nordeste on January 26, which kicks off their 2017 campaign.
