VfL Wolfsburg news and notes
Wolfsburg earned a 2-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sunday afternoon in its first game of the tournament as Robert Herrmann’s two first-half goals earns his side victory.
U.S. U19 international McKinze Gaines notched an assist on Herrmann’s second goal of the game, which highlighted a positive display down the right flank for the 18-year-old.
Wolfsburg goalkeeper Niklas Klinger put on a strong second-half display as the 21-year-old made a number of good saves to preserve a shutout.
Gaines’ teammates David Nieland came on as a late substitute against the Rowdies, and could see more action on Thursday after recording nine goals in 13 games for Wolfsburg U19s so far this season.
Clube Esporte Bahia news and notes
Bahia kicks off the tournament coming off a strong 2016 that saw the club regain its place in Brazil’s top flight after finishing fourth in Serie B a season ago.
The side was led by veteran forward Hernane, who had 11 goals in the league last season, and his presence should provide a challenge for Wolfsburg’s young defense.
Bahia was the second-highest scorer in Serie B a season ago as Edigar Junio also chipped in eight goals while midfielder Juninho added another six.
The club has claimed the Bahia state tournament a record 46 times, and will kick off the next edition of the Baiano on January 29 against Jacobina.
