HARRISON, N.J. – After becoming only the second player to record a hat trick in USL Cup Final history, Brandon Allen could have been forgiven if he had taken a moment in the spotlight for himself.

Instead, the 2016 USL Cup Final MVP passed the credit on after his side’s dominant 5-1 victory against the Swope Park Rangers in front of a festive crowd of 5,547 at Red Bull Arena on Sunday night.

“It’s amazing, but I wouldn’t be able to have those achievements without my teammates,” Allen said. “They’ve been there for me the whole season, they’ve been a big part of that success.”

While he might not take credit for it, Allen’s season is one of the most impressive in the USL’s history. With 21 goals between the regular season and playoffs – where he finished with a league high six tallies after Sunday night’s hat trick – Allen has been the man of the moment for many of the Red Bulls II’s major wins.

He played just such a role against the Rangers. His first contribution to the scoresheet didn’t see him finish a chance, but rather set up Derrick Etienne Jr. in the 18th minute after seizing upon a loose pass in the Swope Park end that afforded him time and space to make a good pass that allowed the Haitian international to finish.

Six minutes before halftime, as the Red Bulls II continued to surge forward against a beleaguered Swope Park defense, Allen’s first goal of the night arrived. David Najem played the key role, stealing possession in the attacking third, and then sending a slippery low cross through the penalty area that found Allen alone for a low shot to the left corner.

The second half saw the Rangers recover, but even after the visitors had halved the lead, Allen and the Red Bulls stayed the course. While there was some additional fatigue thanks to going to overtime against both Rochester and Louisville over the previous two weekends, Allen said the side knew chances would come to put the game away.

“I was a little bit tired, but I knew in the second half they were going to break down and towards the end of the second half chances started to come, and that’s how I got an extra two goals,” Allen said. “When they started to break down, there were a lot of gaps in their back four, and that’s how we created chances.”

Two goals from similar positions three minutes apart sealed the victory, as Allen followed in the footsteps of current MLS standout Dom Dwyer, who claimed 2013 USL Cup Final MVP honors with Orlando City SC. While that type of career might be in Allen’s future, on Sunday night he was simply thrilled to have ended the season in imperious fashion alongside his teammates.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Allen said. “We’ve worked all season for this, and to have that trophy is just incredible.”
