New York Red Bulls II midfielder Vincent Bezecourt is one of the team’s most accurate players with the ball at his feet. The statistics and his highlights certainly confirm that notion.

During the regular season, Bezecourt contributed six goals and two assists in only 760 minutes of action. Those six goals were generated from a small sampling of shots on goal (14) and total shots (28). His well-rounded game has carried into the USL Cup Playoffs, where he is the only player to have posted multiple assists through the first two rounds.

“I always aim for something,” Bezecourt said. “Even if it’s a pass, I’m trying to put my teammate in the best spot, in the best position to score or to pass the ball again. When I’m shooting, I don’t like to shoot just to put it on target. I’m trying to put it in the corner and as far as I can away from the goalie. I always think where to put the ball before I get it.”

Bezecourt has seized the moment over the past month and a half in a regular starting role, and his play has been a crucial reason why NYRBII has put itself one win from advancing to the USL Cup Final, Presented by Nike. Top-seeded New York hosts second-seeded Louisville City FC on Sunday in the Eastern Conference Final at Red Bull Arena (6:30 p.m. ET | Match Center), and the club is primed to keep its impressive season going.

“We won the regular season, but we don’t want to stop now,” Bezecourt said. “We want to go all the way. It’s not going to be easy.”

The 23-year-old Frenchman moved to the States back in 2014 and made an immediate impression when he played for St. Francis Brooklyn in the Northeastern Conference.

“I was playing soccer at a pretty good level in France, like the fourth division,” Bezecourt said, “but it was tough for me to combine my studies and soccer. I couldn’t go pro in France because I don’t know – I was too young or I wasn’t athletic enough, I guess. I went to St. Francis College in Brooklyn when they offered me a scholarship, and we won the conference and went to the NCAA Tournament, which was great.”

After two successful collegiate seasons, the wheels were set in motion with the New York Red Bulls organization. Bezecourt said the connection between the St. Francis Brooklyn program and NYRB assistant coach Chris Armas opened the door.

“They invited me for a combine in December, and they liked me and talked to me, and said they wanted to bring me in for preseason with the first team in January,” Bezecourt said. “I was like, ‘Wow, that’s huge.’”

Bezecourt signed with NYRBII, but he was dealt a setback in just the second game of the season, an MCL injury against the Louisville side that New York is set to face this weekend.

“I was feeling great and feeling confident, and it was my first injury ever – it was new to me,” Bezecourt said. “When I was coming back, the team was doing well and I knew I had to work hard and step up again to prove myself.”

When September rolled around, Bezecourt finally earned his chance for a regular starting role, tallying four goals during the final month of the regular season. During that run, Bezecourt had his share of spectacular moments, showcasing his carving left-footed shot in crucial situations, such as a late equalizer against the defending champion Rochester Rhinos on Sept. 10.

“The lefties are pretty accurate with their feet,” Bezecourt said. “I like to stay after practice and do some extra work – some shooting, some crossing. I love to work on my left foot because I trust it. I try to work on it a lot.”

For a player of Bezecourt’s pedigree and European roots, the Red Bulls environment has been an experience to relish.

“When I went to preseason with the Red Bulls, it felt like Europe – a lot of playing, a lot of intensity and a lot of technical play,” Bezecourt said. “I can say the same in the USL too. The USL is a great league with great teams. Obviously we have one of the best teams in the league because we have great players and very technical players who think as soccer players. They really want to play, connect passes and connect plays.”

Every time Bezecourt is on the pitch, it is a constant reminder to take advantage of the opportunity presented to himself. The club has had the depth to forge ahead in the absence of Junior Flemmings, the team’s second-leading goal scorer who had meniscus surgery in early September. While the Jamaican winger’s absence is significant, the likes of Bezecourt are individually performing at a high clip and thus collectively reaping the benefits during their run in the USL Cup Playoffs.

“Every day you’ve got to prove yourself,” Bezecourt said. “You’ve got to prove to the coaches that you can play, and there’s a lot of competition between the players. It’s challenging every day.

“Our team is so deep that everyone wants to win a spot in the starting 11. It’s every day at practice. It’s crazy. It’s a very competitive team, and I think that’s why we are the best in the league right now.”
