HARRISON, N.J. – The USL Regular Season Championship won more than a week ago, and presented last Sunday, all the New York Red Bulls II had left to play for in the regular season was history.

On Saturday night in a 4-0 victory against FC Montreal, they continued to make their mark in the USL history books. Add most wins in a USL regular season and most goals, too, to the already claimed records for most points in a season, and most away wins.

“I mentioned to the guys about goals against and shutouts before the game because we are focused, especially lately,” said Red Bulls II Coach John Wolyniec. “We’ve been giving other teams nothing and going after shutouts. The guys have been doing that very well and a number of wins have come from shutouts so it’s been a focus of ours. We take a lot of pride in what we do but the main focus is to win.”

The Red Bulls II could equal Rochester’s record of 17 shutouts in a season should they come away with a clean sheet next Saturday in their regular-season finale against the Charleston Battery at MUSC Health Stadium. While the defense was strong again against Montreal, however, it was the team’s attack that again took top billing, as it reached 59 goals for the season, surpassing Orlando City SC’s total of 56 set two seasons ago.

Leading scorer, and leading Rookie of the Year candidate, Brandon Allen led the way again, opening the scoring in the 20th minute before providing a pair of assists on goals by Derrick Etienne Jr. and Stefano Bonomo. Allen’s goals put him into contention for the USL Golden Boot, now one back of FC Cincinnati’s Sean Okoli and the LA Galaxy II’s Jack McBean on 14 for the season.

Florian Valot also continued to show his value to the side since his arrival with a goal and assist, while Etienne and Bonomo’s goals were top-class finishes that rounded out another impressive victory, the club’s 20th of the season.

On another historic day for the side, Wolyniec paid tribute to the attributes that have made his side an irresistible force for much of the regular season.

“It’s a number of things,” said Wolyniec. “I’d say first that they are a good bunch of guys. They work really hard. We make them work really hard but they buy in and they’re all with it. We’re very deep, we have a lot of guys contributing and going places. It speaks to a lot of things like our academy, [Red Bulls Coach] Jesse [Marsch], those guys, what we are doing day in and day out.”
