CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence matched a club record with four goals and defeated Orlando City B 4-0 on Wednesday at the Ramblewood Soccer Complex. Brian Brown led the way with two goals and assist, scoring once in either half. Defender Patrick Slogic also had a strong night with a goal and assist in the opening six minutes. Enzo Martinez contributed a second-half goal to push the lead to 3-0 as Charlotte was in control from start to finish. The four-goal victory is the most lopsided in Independence's two-year history. With the win, the Independence improve to 11-6-6 (39 points) overall and 7-4-1 at home, extending their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). Orlando dropped to 8-8-7 (31 points) overall and 4-4-2 on the road. OCB has now posted back-to-back losses after enjoying a nine-game unbeaten streak (4-0-5) before last Friday’s lopsided 5-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls II. This marked the third and final regular-season game of the series. Orlando had earned a 2-1 win on May 28 and then they drew 1-1 on July 2, with both games played at the Titan Soccer Complex in Melbourne, Fla.

Scoring:
4’ – CLT – Patrick Slogic (Lewis Hilton)
6’ – CLT – Brian Brown (Patrick Slogic)
64’ – CLT – Enzo Martinez (Brian Brown)
71’ – CLT – Brian Brown (David Estrada)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Charlotte pounced all over Orlando from the opening whistle and enjoyed a dream start, tallying twice in the first six minutes. The first was shortly after a corner kick sequence was only partially cleared by the OCB defense. The Independence worked the ball back to Lewis Hilton who had originally taken the corner, and his right-footed cross was bent toward defender Patrick Slogic at the far right post and he headed it home. Then in the sixth minute, Slogic played the ball to Brian Brown at the end line and from a tough angle from the left side of the box, he fired into the back of the net as OCB goalkeeper Mark Ridgers was caught off guard and couldn’t defend the near post, making a meager attempt to stop with his right glove.

  • 2. Enzo Martinez pushed the lead to three in the 64th minute and Brown followed with his second of the match just seven minutes later. Martinez and Brown now hold a share of the goal-scoring lead with seven apiece. Most importantly, as a club the Independence posted their most lopsided victory in team history. Charlotte tallied two other four-goal efforts in 2015 -- a 4-1 victory against Toronto FC II on Sept. 9, 2015, and a 4-2 win against the Rochester Rhinos on Aug. 1, 2015. The latter effort handed the Rhinos their only regular-season loss as Rochester eventually won the 2015 USL Championship.

  • 3. Orlando could not sustain its attack for heavy stretches Wednesday night. OCB’s best opportunity to get back into the match came just two minutes after the Brown goal. Orlando leading goal-scorer Michael Cox threatened from the right and it took a Bilal Duckett clearance to keep Cox from reaching double-digit goals for the season. On the defensive side, Orlando clearly missed the services of Conor Donovan and Kyle McFadden, who were both serving one-game suspensions because of their respective sending offs last week against the New York Red Bulls II.
