Orlando’s Molino, Portland’s Gleeson among five nominees after standout performances

A pair of former USL champions have been nominated for the Etihad MLS Player of the Month Award, with Orlando City SC’s Kevin Molino and the Portland Timbers’ Jake Gleeson among the five nominees for the month of July.

A two-time USL Most Valuable Player with the Lions over the club’s four seasons in the USL, Molino scored three goals and added three assists as Orlando pushed to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff positions. Molino claimed the USL Championship twice for Orlando in 2011 and 2013, and in 2014 scored a then-record 20 goals to claim his second MVP honor in the league.

Gleeson helped back-stop Sacramento Republic FC to the USL Championship in 2014, and this season the New Zealand international has gone from strength to strength since becoming the Timbers’ full-time starter. Gleeson conceded just five goals in six starts for the Timbers this past month to help keep the defending MLS Cup champions in playoff contention in a tight race in the Western Conference.

Voting is currently open at MLSSoccer.com, with the polls set to close at 2:59 a.m. ET on August 4.
