ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Rhinos and Orlando City B played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening at Rhinos Stadium. Orlando had  a little more possession, but Rochester looked the more dangerous side in the first half, and had a pair of good efforts charged down by the OCB defense late in the half after Marcos Ugarte centered from the left side after getting in behind. Orlando threatened more in the second half, as the halftime introduction of Tyler Turner gave the side more impetus down the right side, but Rochester goalkeeper Adam Grinwis and his defense was able to ward off the threats from OCB’s attack to keep the game scoreless.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. For most of the game, the theme was “close, but no cigar” for both attacks. While Rochester and Orlando put themselves into good positions to find the back of the net, either the final finish just missed the target, or the opposing defense recovered in time to make a decisive block. Rochester was arguably the more culpable of the sides, with Christian Volesky flicking a free header in the first half over the crossbar, but the combination of sub-par finishing and resolute defending left the game deadlocked.

  • 2. If it came down to style of play, Orlando probably would have edged this matchup as their quick passing and movement produced nice passages of play in either half. Michael Cox offered a dangerous outlet during the game, too, and between that and the work-rate Coach Anthony Pulis and his staff appear to have instilled, it’s easy to see why OCB is undefeated in its past five games.

  • 3. As with other draws around the league this season, this is a result that will ultimately satisfy neither side. The Rhinos could have started to try and bridge the gap between themselves and the top four with a win on Sunday evening, while Orlando slid out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference after wins for Richmond and Wilmington on Saturday. As the pressure of the season ratchets up, teams in the middle of the pack in each conference like Rochester and Orlando are going to have to try and find ways to turn one point into three in hard-fought games like this.
