CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy II scored once in either half as they took a 2-0 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Friday night at StubHub Center. As in the first game of the home-and-home series between the teams last Friday, the Galaxy II struck early as Adonis Amaya picked off an errant back-pass and flicked home a finish in the seventh minute. Los Dos held onto the lead through the halftime break as goalkeeper Bennett made a pair of good saves, and then added to their lead three minutes into the second half as Alejandro Covarrubias converted from the penalty spot after Jose Villarreal was brought down in the penalty area. Tulsa hit the post with a shot by Henri off a free kick as it tried to rally, but Los Dos held on to claim its sixth win of the season after the Roughnecks were reduced to 10 men very late on when Gustavo Villalobos was sent off.

Scoring:
7’ – LA – Adonis Amaya
48’ – LA – Alejandro Covarrubias (PK)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Earning a two-goal lead against the same opposition it had faced seven days ago, the LA Galaxy II put in a measured performance that allowed them to take an important victory against the Roughnecks. Los Dos continued to push forward in search of another goal to try and put the game away throughout the second half, and while they got a couple of breaks – most notably a shot off the post with just over 10 minutes to go – the side was good value for its win on its third win in four all-time meetings between the teams.

  • 2. As bright as the Galaxy II’s attack looked, goalkeeper Bennett Sneddon played an important role in the shutout win, as he put last week’s performance behind him with a solid display. Sneddon made impressive reaction saves twice in the first half to keep the Galaxy II ahead, and will take confidence from his first professional shutout.

  • 3. The Roughnecks were able to find a way back in last week’s opening game of the home-and-home series, but as the side approached the midway point of the season, it also became the first Western side to register its 10th defeat. The Roughnecks created chances in attack, but as has happened previously this season weren’t able to capitalize properly as the path the playoffs got that much steeper.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match

Alejandro Covarrubias, LA Galaxy II – The dynamic midfielder helped control play in the center of the park for the Galaxy II, and recorded the insurance goal as Los Dos moved at least temporarily into second place in the Western Conference.
