CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy II and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC played to a 0-0 draw in a tense but entertaining contest at the StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium on Saturday night. The Switchbacks (7-2-2, 23pts) came close to an early goal as Martin Maybin shot over the crossbar in the fifth minute, but as the half progressed the Galaxy II (5-2-7, 22pts) began to have the better of the game. Neither side was able to find a breakthrough before the break, though, and that continued into the second half as both the Switchbacks and Los Dos had chances, but weren’t able to convert as the second meeting of the season between the teams ended scoreless.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. The Switchbacks might have had less possession, but they arguably had the better chances of the two teams. The best of those came just before halftime, as a defensive breakdown in the Galaxy II defense allowed Luke Vercollone the chance to play in Miguel Gonzalez, but Galaxy II goalkeeper Clement Diop did just enough to turn the shot wide of the left post.

  • 2. The Galaxy II threatened more consistently, and almost broke the deadlock not long into the second half thanks to the league’s leading scorer, Jack McBean. The big forward fired an outstanding shot from the top of the penalty area, only for it to come back off the crossbar to leave the game scoreless. While last time out against the Switchbacks he had a hat trick, McBean’s effort was definitely there throughout the contest on Saturday, just not the little bit of luck he needed.

  • 3. With the quality on display, this matchup could easily be one we see in October when the USL Playoffs kick off. With the Switchbacks now on their own in first place in the conference, and the Galaxy II just a point behind them, Saturday night’s game saw both teams run themselves to almost a standstill, with plenty of tired legs at the conclusion of the contest for both teams.

Jack McBean, LA Galaxy II – The Galaxy II’s captain didn’t find the back of the net, but his play throughout the game saw Los Dos create a number of chances, and his work-rate break up the Switchbacks’ possession on numerous occasions.
