EDINBURG, Texas – Captain Kevin Garcia scored late in the first half and Rio Grande Valley FC defeated San Antonio FC 1-0 on Saturday at the UT Rio Grande Valley Soccer Complex. It was the second time in 11 days that the two southern Texas sides squared off against each other, playing to a scoreless draw the first time around. Inclement weather delayed Saturday's start time. RGV leads the series (2-0-1) and improves to 5-3-2 overall (17 points). San Antonio falls to 2-5-4 (10 points).

Scoring:
42’ – RGV – Kevin Garcia (Memo Rodriguez)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. The lone first-half goal was off of a beautiful set piece chance as the Toros’ Memo Rodriguez drive in a right-footed corner kick from the left side. Kevin Garcia rose among the San Antonio defense and flicked it perfectly underneath the crossbar toward the upper right corner of the frame for a 1-0 RGV lead.

  • 2. Though RGV did not add to its lead, the club’s play from the right flank created some strong chances for an insurance tally. The Toros just missed connecting with Rodriguez sliding in toward the far left post in the 71st minute. Then Rodriguez set up Kyle Murphy with a nice cross, and Murphy’s header attempt was pushed just wide of the frame in the 73rd minute.

  • 3. The series has featured only one goal thus far in the past two matches after combining for five the first time around early in the year. The two sides played to a scoreless draw on May 25, and the defenses and goalkeeping have been at the forefront in their recent matchups. With the opportunities brewed among the open style of play, some heightened scoring could be on the horizon when they next meet in the regular-season finale for both teams on Sept. 24 at RGV FC Toros Stadium.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:
