COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Marty Maybin and Miguel Gonzalez pushed for a quick two-goal lead and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC never looked back en route to a 2-0 victory against Saint Louis FC on Saturday at Switchbacks Stadium. With the victory, Colorado Springs moved even with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in points in the Western Conference with 22. The Switchbacks improve to 7-2-1 overall and stay unbeaten at home at 4-0-1. Saint Louis falls to 4-4-4 (16 points) and 3-4-1 on the road.

Scoring:
3’ – COS – Marty Maybin
18’ – COS – Miguel Gonzalez (Josh Suggs)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. The Switchbacks had several lineup changes heading in, but one key returnee was goal-scoring leader Marty Maybin. He put his side up early as Saint Louis was looking to play the ball back to goalkeeper Mark Pais in the third minute. The ball never reached him as Maybin stepped in and quickly slotted it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead and his team-leading fifth tally of the season.

  • 2. The strongest skill of the night was a well-placed strike from Miguel Gonzalez from an incredibly difficult angle in the 18th minute. Josh Suggs, who wore the captain’s armband Saturday night, pushed up the left side during that sequence and fed the ball in to Gonzalez. From a tight angle on the left, Gonzalez had a pinpoint shot that snuck inside the far right post to gain a two-goal cushion.

  • 3. Saint Louis saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to a close. STLFC had improved in recent weeks on the offensive side, highlighted by its impressive 5-2 showing at Tulsa Roughnecks FC on May 21. That knack for goal didn’t show in the high altitude as the club was shut out for just the second time in a seven-game stretch. However, it is the fifth time Saint Louis has been held scoreless overall this year.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:
Miguel Gonzalez, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC - Gonzalez had an active first half and had the highlight of the night with a well-placed goal to provide a cushion for the host Switchbacks.
