TULSA, Okla. – OKC Energy FC got first-half goals from Wojciech Wojcik and Daniel Gonzalez to take a 2-0 victory against Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the first Black Gold Derby of the season at ONEOK Field on Saturday night. After an even start, Energy FC (4-1-4, 16pts) took the lead in the 20th minute as a nice piece of passing just outside the Tulsa penalty area opened up a lane for Kyle Hyland to find Wojciech Wojcik with a cross from the left for a first-time finish. Hyland again came to the fore eight minute later as his cross found Daniel Gonzalez to make it 2-0. Tulsa (2-8-1, 7pts) had some chances to get back into the game in the second half, but the visitors held on to earn a third consecutive road shutout in league play.

Scoring:
20’ – OKC – Wojciech Wojcik (Kyle Hyland)
28’ – OKC – Daniel Gonzalez (Kyle Hyland)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. After scoring the game-winner in overtime against Rayo OKC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in midweek, Energy FC’s Kyle Hyland played provider to excellent effect on Saturday. The left back set up both of Energy FC’s first two goals, as he put his delivery in a place that made it very difficult for the Roughnecks defense to deal with, which as a result allowed Wojciech Wojcik and Daniel Gonzalez the chance to finish strongly.

  • 2. Things could have been different for the Roughnecks if not for an outstanding save just three minutes in by Energy FC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi. A long pass forward found Tulsa’s Brady Ballew, and his audacious chip would have been a brilliant goal had it not been for Laurendi’s palm swatting it out of the air, and the rebound being cleared. Instead, the save provided fuel for OKC, which then gradually took over the remainder of the half.

  • 3. Energy FC’s attack has been starting to click into gear in recent games, but in addition to that the club’s defense has been excellent over the course of what is now an eight-game undefeated streak. Since a 2-2 draw against Saint Louis FC that started the run of form, Energy FC’s defense has not conceded more than one goal, which will be very pleasing to Coach Jimmy Nielsen as his side continues to climb the standings.
