VAUGHN, Ontario – Mael Corboz scored the winner with seven minutes to go as Wilmington Hammerheads FC took a 2-1 win against Toronto FC II on Sunday evening at the Ontario Soccer Centre. Toronto took a deserved lead midway through the first half when a good pass down the left by Robert Boskovic found Sal Bernal, and his low cross came to Shaan Hundal, who finished for his first professional goal. Wilmington leveled seven minutes later from the penalty spot through Bruno Perone, and then gained a man advantage when Toronto’s Skylar Thomas was sent off with just under half-an-hour to go for his second yellow card. The Hammerheads made that advantage tell with seven minutes to go, as Corboz struck for his first professional goal, before Matthew Barnes-Homer added a late goal on the counter-attack.

Three Things That Matter:

• 1. Toronto came out much the brighter side, and definitely deserved its lead as its crisp passing repeatedly put the Hammerheads on their heels. After coming very close to opening his account previously, Shaan Hundal’s first professional goal highlighted a very good performance, and it will be interesting to see if the pace and attacking ability he possesses can combine well with Raheem Edwards when the Canadian U23 international returns to the lineup.

• 2. Wilmington wasn’t really in the game for the opening half-hour, but the Hammerheads came to life as a defensive lapse let them get back on level terms on Bruno Perone’s fourth goal of the season. The goal seemed to jump-start the visitors, and they could easily have taken the lead before the break on a free header for Kyle Parker that ended up going straight at Toronto goalkeeper Quillan Roberts with the goal at his mercy.

• 3. After Skylar Thomas’ second yellow card for Toronto, it was going to be essential for the hammerheads to press home their advantage, and after some outstanding saves by Quillan Roberts kept Toronto level, Mael Corboz found the decisive finish with an excellent strike from the right side of the penalty area that Roberts could do nothing about. After going five games without a win, the Hammerheads will now head home with a chance to build on a big road win.
