Fujii’s complete performance, Los Dos’ strong first half draw rave reviews

The LA Galaxy II have had their swings like any other club, and Saturday’s 4-1 victory against Arizona United SC certainly represents one of the club’s peaks of the season.

Head Coach Curt Onalfo thought two elements stood out in particular – the three-goal first half and particularly 19-year-old Ryo Fujii’s performance overall.

“Fujii, that was the most complete performance he has put together,” Onalfo said. “He was ‘complete’ defensively, and he scored two great goals. We’re really pleased with that progress.”

The highlight for Fujii was a strike from nearly 30 yards out that had pushed the lead to 3-0.

“Going up 3-0 in the first half was definitely a good sign,” Fujii said. “It’s something that we can build on and hopefully do that every game from now on.”

With a big match on the horizon at Sacramento Republic FC next Saturday, the performance is certainly one that Onalfo’s side would want to replicate moving forward.

“We had an excellent first half – the best 45 minutes we’ve played all year, which was really encouraging,” Onalfo said. “We moved the ball well. We created chances from all different angles. We defended well individually and collectively.”

Onalfo did anticipate the possibility of a letdown going up 3-0 through one half, but he also was impressed that the team showed some response after Long Tan’s penalty kick had put United on the board late. Jack McBean notched his second goal of the match to reclaim a three-goal cushion.

“It’s a little bit of human nature to let your foot off the gas a little bit, but more credit to Arizona because they came out with enormous energy and kept pushing the game,” Onalfo said. “That’s what led to the penalty kick, and then we woke up a little bit and closed out the game with the fourth goal. Overall, it was a good performance.”
