SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Swope Park Rangers and Sacramento Republic FC exchanged goals three minutes apart as they played to a 1-1 draw at Bonney Field on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 11,569 fans. Sacramento held the upper hand for more of the contest, but the Rangers (3-4-2, 11pts) took the lead with 16 minutes to go an outstanding shot from 30 yards by Kevin Oliveira that tailed away perfectly into the right corner of the net. Republic FC (4-3-2, 14pts) hit back quickly, as Tommy Stewart set up Cameron Iwasa to equalizer two minutes later after a good passing movement. The hosts then almost grabbed a late winner through Danny Barrera, only for Swope Park goalkeeper Zac Lubin to make a great save to keep it level.

Scoring:
73’ – SPR – Kevin Oliveira (Mark-Anthony Gonzalez)
76’ – SAC – Cameron Iwasa (Tommy Stewart)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. As frustrating a night as Sacramento was having in front of goal, it could have been easy for the players’ heads to drop when Swope Park took the lead with an excellent finish by Kevin Oliveira. Instead, Republic FC responded with an excellent finish of its own, with a clever passing movement unlocking the Rangers’ defense to allow Cameron Iwasa to level the score only three minutes after going behind. That set up a grandstand finish, and an effort that would have been a worth game-winner by Danny Barrera that was denied by Rangers goalkeeper Zac Lubin, but Sacramento will be OK with continuing its undefeated streak tonight.

  • 2. Swope Park were no bystanders in the contest, either, as Kevin Oliveira and Daniel Salloi both put in strong performances that were eventually rewarded with an excellent goal from distance by Oliveira. After a tough result last Saturday night, the Rangers will round out their road trip against Portland next weekend with some additional confidence as they look to get back into the playoff hunt.

  • 3. The young English duo of Harry Williams and Daniel Trickett-Smith both had very positive performances for Republic FC, and with a little better luck either could have found the back of the net. With Trickett-Smith’s addition to the squad, it will be fascinating to see how their chemistry develops over the next few weeks, because both appear to have the technical tools that can provide Sacramento with some real flair in the attacking third.
