Saint Louis FC goalkeeper excited to be with Reggae Boyz after standout 2015 Gold Cup

After reaching the final of the 2015 Gold Cup last year, Saint Louis FC goalkeeper Ryan Thompson believes Jamaica is capable of another big performance this summer as the squad gears up for the Copa America Centenario.

“We have the talent,” Thompson told the Jamaican Football Federation’s YouTube channel. “We have players who have been playing consistently for their clubs, and players playing for big clubs, and have been doing well also for the national team. Once we can get that together, collectively as a group, we can try to outdo what we did in the Gold Cup. Great things are in store.”

Thompson will start this year’s tournament in a similar position to last year, with the Philadelphia Union’s Andre Blake the presumptive starter for the tournament after a stellar season so far in Major League Soccer. As always, though, Thompson will be ready if the call comes, as it did a year ago when he came off the bench to help Jamaica reach the final, including a memorable semifinal win against the United States.

“Everything is about timing and just being patient, keeping your head on and just keep working,” Thompson said. “You just never know when opportunity is going to come, so the key is just to make sure you’re ready whenever those opportunities come.”

A new addition to Saint Louis this season, Thompson is enjoying his time with the new club.

“I’m having fun at my club,” Thompson said. “I love Saint Louis, it’s a great organization, my goalkeeper coach is awesome, so I’m thankful for that.”

With the side set to kick off in 10 days against Venezuela, with games against Mexico and Uruguay to follow, Thompson is grateful for the chance to be part of what he hopes will be another special summer for the Reggae Boyz.

“It’s always a blessing to be here representing your country,” Thompson said. “Being amongst the lads, it’s a feeling that’s kind of hard to explain, but you just have to be here to know that feeling.”
