SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC and Rio Grande Valley FC played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 as goalkeepers Josh Ford of SAFC and Calle Brown of RGVFC put in stellar performances at Toyota Field.  Both sides had chances in the game, as RGVFC (4-2-3, 15pts) almost took the lead through both Jose Escalante and Memo Rodriguez, only for Ford to come up big and keep the game scoreless. San Antonio (2-4-4, 10pts) almost took the lead early in the second half when Jason Johnson had his effort saved by Brown, and late on as Brown denied Victor Araujo, but honors ended even in the second edition of the South Texas Derby.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. After seeing OKC Energy FC come in and get a massive performance from goalkeeper Cody Laurendi on Saturday night, San Antonio FC got one itself from its captain, Josh Ford, to keep it in the game for much of the contest. Ford made good saves from Jose Escalante and Memo Rodriguez to keep the game scoreless at the break, and continued with more of the same after to earn his second shutout of the season.

  • 2. San Antonio appeared sharper after the halftime break, and could easily have stolen all three points as chances for Jason Johnson and Greg Cochrane arrived after good pressure in the second half. Overall, though, the side will be pleased to take something from the contest and move into double-digit points for the season.

  • 3. After a four-goal outburst on Saturday against the Swope Park Rangers on Saturday night, the Toros will likely be disappointed not to have followed on with another decisive performance in the final third. The talent the side has on display was evident again on Wednesday, though, with T.J. Casner pulling the strings, and both Jose Escalante and Memo Rodriguez looking very dangerous. The Toros will visit Saint Louis FC on Sunday night in what should be a highly compelling contest between two teams that sit level on points in the middle of the West’s playoff positions.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match

Josh Ford, San Antonio FC – The club’s captain put in arguably his best performance of the season on Wednesday night, and made a handful of outstanding saves to keep his side in the game, and in the end earn SAFC a point.
