PEORIA, Ariz. – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC took a 3-1 victory against Arizona United SC on Saturday night at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Switchbacks hit the post early, but took the lead in the eighth minute when Josh Suggs curled home a corner kick directly into the net from the right to take a 1-0 lead. Arizona responded from a corner of its own midway through the first half as Julian Ringhof scored on a powerful header, but the Switchbacks regained the lead in the 33rd minute when Miguel Gonzalez curled home a beautiful finish from the left side of the penalty area. Saeed Robinson added a third for the Switchbacks, who moved into second in the USL’s Western Conference with the win.

Scoring:
8’ – COS – Josh Suggs
21’ – AZ – Julian Ringhof (Luke Rooney)
33’ – COS – Miguel Gonzalez (Luke Vercollone)
77’ – COS – Saeed Robinson

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Colorado Springs’ third consecutive win had a pair of high-points in its goals by Josh Suggs and Miguel Gonzalez, but what stood out most was the consistency the side showed as it took its sixth win of the season on Saturday night. One performance aside, the Switchbacks’ experience has been on full display so far this season, and it certainly kept up the pressure on Vancouver as the two teams battle for the top spot in the Western Conference.

  • 2. Miguel Gonzalez hasn’t been quite as prolific as in his first season for the Switchbacks, but his second goal of the season was a reminder of how dangerous he can be if given the opportunity. After a good run across the back line that allowed him to receive possession, Gonzalez’s pin-point curled finish into the right corner of the net was a thing of beauty to restore his side’s lead before the break.

  • 3. Arizona isn’t quite a finished product yet, but the progress the side is making was evident even in defeat on Saturday night. United was able to create chances to find an equalizer in the second half, and while those didn’t come to fruition, there were good spells of possession and pressure throughout the game that bode well for the side. Converting chances into goals, and those goals into points needs to happen sooner rather than later if United is to reach the playoffs, but the ground-work is there for a much better performance as Arizona makes its second visit to face the LA Galaxy II in its next outing.
