RICHMOND, Va. – Louisville City FC and the Richmond Kickers played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night at City Stadium, as the visitors and Eastern Conference leaders were unable to unlock a Kickers’ side that played with 10 men for the final half-hour. Neither side was able to create much in the opening hour, with Richmond going closest to opening the scoring when Brian Ownby was palmed over the crossbar by Louisville goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh. In the 62nd minute the Kickers were reduced to 10 men when Alex Lee was sent off, but Louisville was unable to take advantage of its additional man in the final half-hour as the game ended deadlocked.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. In wet and windy conditions, the game felt somewhat similar to the last time these played at City Stadium early in the 2015 season. Back then, each side was able to find the back of the net, but both defenses were watertight on Saturday night as chances were relatively few and far between despite some nice build-up play by both teams, particularly when the game was 11-on-11.

  • 2. With both teams looking to use similar attacking avenues, it shouldn’t have come as much surprise that both were well equipped to limit clear attacking chances defensively. The difference was going to come when one side was able to execute precisely enough to pull the other into a bad situation, or find a new avenue of attack, but neither arrived as both defenses put together relatively error-free performances.

  • 3. The red card to Richmond’s Alex Lee made a difference in the game, as Louisville looked to use its man-advantage to find a winner in the final half-hour. Kickers goalkeeper Charlie Horton put in a solid performance as the latest loan replacement for Ryan Taylor in the Kickers goal, however, while William Yomby and Hugh Roberts did well to hold first Chandler Hoffman and then Cameron Lancaster with few chances to break the deadlock.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match

Charlie Horton, Richmond Kickers - The U.S. U23 National Team goalkeeper only recorded two saves in his shutout as he made his Kickers debut on loan from D.C. United, but was strong in the air throughout the game as Louisville looked to attack down the flanks and deliver dangerous crosses into the penalty area.
