VANCOUVER – Kyle Greig continued his hot start to the season with two goals as Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 stormed out of the gate and was just able to hang on for a 4-3 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Sunday at UBC Thunderbird Stadium. Vancouver’s 15-year-old Alphonso Davies became the youngest USL player to score a goal and Brett Levis scored on a rebound as WFC2 moved ahead of Los Dos for the Western Conference lead. Vancouver maintains its unbeaten start to the season, improving to 5-0-2 (17 points) while the Galaxy II fall to 4-1-4 (16 points) and have dropped two straight. WFC2’s four-goal total was the highest production in club history, and the Galaxy II’s four-goal concession is the most in their history since joining the USL in 2014.

Scoring:
3’ – VAN – Kyle Greig (Kadin Chung)
17’ – VAN – Kyle Greig (Daniel Haber)
21’ – VAN – Alphonso Davies
35’ – LA – Jose Villarreal
81’ – VAN – Brett Levis
84’ – LA – Denzel Slager
90’+ – LA – Jose Villarreal (penalty)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Kyle Greig has stepped up well for his new side this year after two seasons with OKC Energy FC, notching his team-leading sixth goal of the season for Vancouver in the opening minutes. The finish was one of the easier ones he will see this year. Marco Bustos played the ball up to Kadin Chung down the right side and Chung crossed in across the edge of the six. Greig simply had to redirect with his right foot to give WFC2 a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

  • 2. Alphonso Davies was a nuisance to Los Dos’ defense in the early stages, and his individual effort shone in the 21st minute when he stole the ball from Galaxy II defender Oscar Sorto. Once the ball was at Davies’ feet, he had an open channel for the goal, slotting home for a 3-0 Vancouver lead.

  • 3. Jose Villarreal netted the most impressive strike of the match, a beautiful left-footed free kick driven into the near upper right corner to cut Vancouver’s lead to 3-1 in the 35th minute. With Villarreal’s stoppage-time penalty kick, he now has four goals this season as he and Los Dos made things interesting down the stretch.
