BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Ryan Richter and Derrick Jones tallied back-to-back penalty kicks in a four-minute span to rally for a 2-1 victory against Eastern Conference cellar dweller FC Montreal on Sunday at Goodman Stadium. The two goals helped Bethlehem overcome a first-half deficit as Montreal’s David Choiniere tallied his first goal of the season. With the win, the Steel improved to 3-2-3 (12 points) and extend their unbeaten streak to five games (2-0-3). Bethlehem is now 2-0-0 against Montreal, which is still winless this year at 0-7-0.

Scoring:
25’ – MTL– David Choiniere
77’ – BST – Ryan Richter (penalty)
81’ – BST – Derrick Jones (penalty)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. The penalty kicks were the difference between Bethlehem salvaging some points and Montreal hoping to put an end to its season-long skid. Steel captain Ryan Richter converted a 77th-minute penalty kick, though he probably wished he could have placed it in a better spot. Richter’s right-footed stop was deflected well by Montreal goalkeeper James Pantemis with the left glove, but it wasn’t enough to clear it from the frame as Bethlehem found its equalizer. Bethlehem pushed ahead again in the 81st minute, drawing another PK that Derrick Jones calmly placed into the left of the frame. Pantemis had anticipated the opposite direction.

  • 2. The Philadelphia Union loaned goalkeeper Matt Jones to the Steel as he made his first start for the USL side. John McCarthy had played in all seven previous Bethlehem matches. Jones was called upon in stoppage time to preserve the one-goal lead and delivered.

  • 3. With only two goals in six games heading in, FC Montreal needed to get some type of spark offensively and they found it through the composed play of David Choiniere. For the game’s opening goal in the 25th minute, Montreal stole the ball in the midfield and Choiniere had a nice individual effort pushing forward, with a little step-over move, and then shooting right-footed from 20 yards out for his first goal and a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the visiting side, some shaky defensive moments led to the two penalty kicks.
