The Charleston Battery offense has picked up during the past several weeks, to the tune of three consecutive multi-goal performances.

With USL all-time goal-scoring leader Dane Kelly heading to the Swope Park Rangers during the offseason, the club knew it would need someone else to fill the void. Another talented Jamaican footballer, Montreal Impact loanee Romario Williams, has been the answer.

Williams helped the Battery defeat Toronto FC II 2-0 on Saturday night at MUSC Health Stadium, supplying his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the early going to set the tone. The 21-year-old is now third among the league’s goal-scorers and has scored in three consecutive matches.

“His scoring streak is great,” Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser said. “When you’re rolling you have to keep it going. We’re getting him the ball in good spots. It’s unfortunate he didn’t get the second one there to give him another one.”

The Battery looked primed to score beyond the two goals they generated Saturday. Their width created a number of scoring chances as they looked to be in complete control from start to finish against Toronto.

“Coach has been emphasizing getting the ball wide and getting balls into the box, and that’s what we’ve been doing,” Williams said. “It’s been paying off.”

“We could have had two or three right there in the first 10 minutes and we could have really opened up the doors a little bit,” Anhaeuser said. “But we’re getting in behind defenses a little better and getting the easier chances. Romario finished another one off tonight and then [Maikel] Chang finished a nice one right at the beginning of the second half. So it’s good that we have other weapons. Romario’s really causing defenses problems right now.”

While Williams can effectively create for himself on the dribble, his positioning during Charleston’s attacking runs has been consistent. Chang and Williams connected nearly twice in the span of five minutes and Williams is putting himself into spots where he simply needs to take one or two touches to threaten the opposing net.

“I’m just in a rhythm right now,” Williams said. “I’m just trying to stay focused and bring the same energy and attitude game in and game out and try to get myself on the score sheet. The guys have been doing well and getting me the ball in good positions, good spots to finish, and I’ve been doing my job pretty well. I’m just hoping to keep it going.”

The Battery (4-2-3, 15 points) also extended their home unbeaten streak to 29 games, but the full three points were far more important in their eyes as they continue to climb up the Eastern Conference standings.

“We kept the streak going, but that’s not something we’re going to worry about,” Anhaeuser said. “We just want to get three points every home game.”
