CHARLESTON, S.C. – The USL’s longest home unbeaten streak was once again on the line and the Charleston Battery prevailed with a 2-0 victory against Toronto FC II on Saturday in front of crowd of 5,481 at MUSC Health Stadium. Romario Williams provided a first-half tally and Maikel Chang tallied in the second half as the Battery’s home unbeaten run reached 29 games. Charleston improved to 4-2-3 (15 points) and 3-0-1 at home. Toronto fell to 2-4-2 (8 points) and 1-2-1 on the road. This marked the start of a three-game road trip for TFC II.

Scoring:
10’ – CHS – Romario Williams (Maikel Chang)
48’ – CHS – Maikel Chang (Zach Prince)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. The Battery’s Maikel Chang and Romario Williams combination was effective from the get-go. Shortly after Williams couldn’t quite take advantage of a third-minute giveaway by Toronto goalkeeper Alex Bono, Williams delivered the next time around in the 10th minute. The buildup by the Battery was drawn up perfectly. Chang played a nice give-and-go with Ricky Garbanzo, Chang crossed in from the left and Williams slotted home from the edge of the six for the 1-0 lead. It was Williams’ sixth goal of the season as the Montreal Impact loanee has had a strong run for Charleston thus far. Chang and Williams nearly pulled off a carbon copy of their goal in the 15th minute, but Bono made the stop with his body to limit the damage.

  • 2. Toronto’s defense had a hot-and-cold match, occasionally coming up with good blocks and saves but also prone to error. Chang’s 48th-minute goal was a fitting example. Toronto’s defense alertly blocked Chang’s original attempt on that sequence, but Charleston kept things alive, and Zach Prince’s cross attempt from the left clearly should have been cleared by Toronto’s Mitch Taintor. Instead, he whiffed on the clearance and Chang finished from point-blank range for the 2-0 lead. Taintor punched the ground in frustration.

  • 3. Charleston has posted a 19-0-10 record during its 29-game home unbeaten run. It dates back to May of 2014 and includes last year’s postseason win against the Richmond Kickers.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match:
Maikel Chang, Charleston Battery –
Chang was involved in both goals, first setting up Romario Williams and then finishing himself in the second half. He set the tone early on for the Battery, nearly connecting with Williams on another occasion in the game’s opening half.
