14 players of 18 selected competing in the USL this season

Fourteen USL standouts, including current USL Player of the Week Ben McKendry, have been named to the 18-man Canada U23 National Team squad that will head to face Guyana and Grenada for a pair of international exhibitions in the next 10 days.

McKendry is one of three players from the Whitecaps organization to be selected to the team, with the midfielder being joined by goalkeeper Marco Carducci and defender Chris Serban.

Toronto FC II has the largest contingent of players with four, as captain Skylar Thomas is joined by midfielder Chris Manella and forwards Raheem Edwards and Jordan Hamilton. Edwards currently lead TFC II with four goals this season.

FC Montreal is also represented, with goalkeeper Max Crepeau, defender Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare and midfielder Louis Beland-Goyette all named to the squad.

Other players included in the squad are Louisville City FC’s Mark-Anthony Kaye, Orlando City B’s Richie Laryea, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ Jordan Murrell, and the Seattle Sounders FC 2’s Brandon John.

Former Toronto FC II midfielder Manny Aparicio, Charleston Battery midfielder Ben Fisk and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 forward Caleb Clarke were also named to the squad.

“These matches will present us with another opportunity ‎to introduce new players to the Men's National Team program,” said Michael Findlay, the project's U-23 coach, but also assistant coach to Canada Soccer's Men's National Team. “We must continue the evaluation of players in this key transitional age group with the objective to expand the Men's National Team program's long list of players moving forward.”

The Canada U23s will face the full national teams from Guyana in Georgetown on May 15, and Grenada in St. George’s on May 18, with both Caribbean nations currently preparing for the Caribbean Cup this June that serves as part of qualification for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
