The Charleston Battery have two wins under their belt so far this season, but it was the battle during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds that has Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser singing the team’s praises.

“We played probably our best overall performance of the year so far,” Anhaeuser said. “We couldn’t get that end result in the first half, and they caught us on the counter, so it was really disappointing not to get the three points.”

The consolation for Charleston was earning just enough to keep the team’s impressive home unbeaten streak intact. Thanks to Justin Portillo’s penalty kick in the second half, the Battery are unbeaten in 28 consecutive games at MUSC Health Stadium, going 18-0-10 during a span that goes back to May of 2014.

“We know at home, even if we go down a goal, that with the fans and everything we are always in the game,” Portillo said. “We know that if we stay disciplined the goal will come. Unfortunately the second one didn’t come.”

The Battery (2-1-3, 9 points) will now take to the road for two games in a four-day stretch, starting with the defending champion Rochester Rhinos on Friday, followed by the Harrisburg City Islanders next Monday, May 9.

“We go on the road next week, so we want to do the same things and attack,” Anhaeuser said. “We might be a little more cautious because we opened it up a lot today and did very well.”
