Former New York Red Bulls Homegrown joins Wilmington for rookie season

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Wilmington Hammerheads FC has announced the signing of former Maryland standout Mael Corboz ahead of the 2016 USL season.

Corboz spent much of this preseason with the New York Red Bulls, where he had been an academy standout prior to his college career. The 21-year-old had also helped the Red Bulls U23 reach the 2015 PDL Championship last summer in the club’s first season in the league, but was released from a Homegrown Player contract this preseason, opening the opportunity for the Hammerheads to sign him.

“I am very excited to join the Wilmington Hammerheads,” said Corboz. “I have only heard great things about the organization and the tight-knit community in Wilmington. I really believe it is a great place for me to launch my professional career. I'm excited to get started and work hard on the field.”

With Maryland, Corboz played in every game of both his junior and senior seasons, and was named to the All-Big Ten First Team each of the past two years. Prior to joining the Red Bulls Academy, Corboz played for Cesar Stars Academy, part of the Hammerhead sport family owned by Hammerheads owner George Altirs.

“Mael is young talent. I think fans will be excited to come and see a player of his ability this season,” said Hammerheads Coach Mark Briggs. “He is a great addition to the roster, as well as the Wilmington Community.”

The Hammerheads kick off the 2016 USL regular season on Saturday, March 26 as they visit Orlando City B at the Titan Soccer Complex. The club’s home opener is set for Friday, April 1 as it hosts the Richmond Kickers.
