Charleston’s Ferguson Named Player of the Week

TAMPA, Fla. – Charleston Battery defender Shawn Ferguson has been voted the USL Player of the Week for the 26th week of the 2015 season after he led the Battery defense in a 2-0 victory against Louisville City FC. The win earned the club a place in the USL Playoffs for a fifth consecutive season.

Ferguson received 38 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market. FC Montreal forward Alessandro Riggi finished second with 31 percent.

USL Team of the Week

GK – Calle Brown, Pittsburgh Riverhounds: Recorded six saves as the 10-man Riverhounds rallied to earn a 1-1 draw with Wilmington Hammerheads FC

D – Phanuel Kavita, Real Monarchs SLC: Earned a second consecutive appearance on the Team of the Week after a strong display in the Monarchs’ 1-0 win against Arizona

D – Shawn Ferguson, Charleston Battery: Was instrumental in limiting Louisville to only five shots, only two of which found the target, in a playoff-clinching victory

D – Brenton Griffiths, Orange County Blues FC: Helped the Blues earn four points in Seattle and Vancouver, including the game-tying goal against WFC2, to earn a second consecutive berth

M – George Davis IV, Richmond Kickers: Scored a stoppage-time equalizer to earn the Kickers a point in a key contest in the Eastern Conference playoff race against Harrisburg

M – Luke Vercollone, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC: Led the Switchbacks to a victory against Austin with a pair of goals, and another excellent two-way performance

M – Sebastian Dalgaard, OKC Energy FC: Drove home a remarkable finish that looked set to be the winner for Energy FC until the Switchbacks scored late in a 3-3 draw

M – Jacob Bushue, Saint Louis FC: Scored an excellent goal, and was strong throughout the contest as Saint Louis defeated Charlotte 2-0

F – Ryan Finley, Charlotte Independence: Came off the bench to score a pair of goals to lead the Independence to a victory against Toronto FC II

F – Justin Braun, Sacramento Republic FC: Had a pair of goals for the second consecutive game as Sacramento defeated Portland to earn a second straight selection

F – Alessandro Riggi, FC Montreal: Scored both goals as FC Montreal took a victory against the New York Red Bulls II
