USL PRO Welcomes Independence
New franchise to begin play in Charlotte in 2015

USL PRO is proud to announce the Charlotte Independence will join the league beginning with the 2015 season. The team will feature an ownership group led by Jim McPhilliamy, the current President & Managing Partner of Major League Lacrosse’s Charlotte Hounds. “The Charlotte Independence, with their distinguished professional sports experience, will be one of the driving factors in placing the city of Charlotte prominently on the U.S. soccer map while contributing to the growth and success of USL PRO, on and off the field,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said.

City Islanders Continue To Entertain

A season ago, the Harrisburg City Islanders were arguably the most entertaining side to watch in USL PRO. Bill Becher’s side led the league with 55 goals as the duo of Lucky Mkosana and Sainey Touray combined for 24 goals to lead the club’s free-flowing attack. This offseason, both Mkosana and Touray departed, but the City Islanders’ have remained just as entertaining with another 45 goals. Instead of relying on a pair of double-digit scorers, however, Harrisburg has received contributions from across the squad, with three players tied for a team-high with six goals.

Bakowska-Mathews Has Big Week for FSU

Former Seattle Sounders Women and Laval Comets midfielder Marta Bakowska-Mathews had an impressive week for the No. 5-ranked Florida State Seminoles and earned a trio of honors, leading the list of W-League players recognized for their NCAA Division I performances last week. A senior, Bakowska-Mathews was chosen as NSCAA Division I Women’s Player of the Week and ACC Co-Player of the Week, while also being selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.

Correa Leads College Award Winners

A new season has brought a new conference for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who made their debut as part of the Big Ten this fall. One of the key players for the Scarlet Knights this season has been Jersey Express midfielder JP Correa, and he claimed the program’s first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award this week after leading the side to a thrilling 3-2 victory against Wisconsin Friday night.

McCaskill Making Moves For Gamecocks

As you watch South Carolina’s Savannah McCaskill at work, the thing that jumps out immediately is her movement. On the ball, but in particular off, the Gamecocks forward stays connected to the game, offering for her midfield, making strong runs in behind the opposing defense, creating space for others to run into.

Semifinals Set in USL PRO Playoffs

The Harrisburg City Islanders scored the upset of the round as they defeated USL PRO regular season champion Orlando City in the quarterfinals of the 2014 USL PRO Playoffs on Saturday night. The Richmond Kickers, LA Galaxy II and Sacramento Republic FC also advanced, ensuring there will be a new champion as the postseason heads to the semifinals next weekend.
