15-year-old Make-A-Wish signing claims October’s award for strike vs. Lights FC

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC forward Matthew Harding has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month for October as his smooth strike against Las Vegas Lights FC at Papa Murphy’s Park took top spot in the online poll conducted over the past weekend.

Harding, who signed a one-game contract through the help of Make-A-Wish and UC Davis Children’s Hospital, marked his team debut with a goal in the opening minute as he ran behind the Las Vegas defense and fired a right-footed shot past Lights FC goalkeeper Thomas Olsen to become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer at just 15 years old.

Harding’s goal, which is now eligible for 2018 Goal of the Year, earned 55 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday. Las Vegas Lights FC’s Samuel Ochoa finished second with 27 percent for his outstanding overhead kick in his side’s victory over Phoenix Rising FC, while Charlotte Independence forward Jorge Herrera took third with 10 percent for his acrobatic bicycle kick against North Carolina FC at Sportsplex at Matthews.
