15-year-old Make-A-Wish signing earns top spot in weekly poll for strike vs. Lights FC

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC forward Matthew Harding has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 31 of the 2018 season as his smooth strike against Las Vegas Lights FC last Saturday night at Papa Murphy’s Park took top spot in the weekly online poll.

Harding, who signed a one-game contract through the help of Make-A-Wish and UC Davis Children’s Hospital, marked his team debut with a goal in the opening minute as he ran behind the Las Vegas defense and fired a right-footed shot past Lights FC goalkeeper Thomas Olsen to become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer at just 15 years old.

Harding’s goal, which will now be in the running for Goal of the Month, earned 84 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday. Charlotte Independence forward Jorge Herrera finished second with nine percent for his sensational bicycle kick in his side’s match against North Carolina FC last Saturday, while Charleston’s Gordon Wild earned a share of third place for his volleyed effort against Ottawa Fury FC on Saturday alongside Las Vegas’ Samuel Ochoa, who converted an acrobatic overhead kick in his side’s 5-2 win over Phoenix Rising FC last Wednesday.
