San Antonio goalkeeper claims honor for scrambling save against Roughnecks

TAMPA, Fla. – San Antonio FC goalkeeper Matt Cardone has claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Month award for September as his fingertip save after scrambling back to deny an audacious chip against Tulsa Roughnecks FC at ONEOK Field took top honors in the online poll conducted over the past weekend.

Cardone – who last week earned the USL’s annual #FearTheBear award – made a spectacular save to keep out an equally spectacular effort by the Roughnecks’ Isaac Diaz on September 15. Cardone was forced to scrambled back toward his own goal, backpedaling to keep out a shot from just inside the SAFC half by Diaz as he just got a hand to the ball and turn it over the crossbar.

Cardone’s save earned 34 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday. Sacramento Republic FC’s Josh Cohen finished second on 24 percent for his excellent penalty-kick save against Seattle Sounders FC 2, while Ottawa Fury FC’s Maxime Crepeau finished third with 20 percent for his reflex stop to deny Louisville City FC’s Niall McCabe at Slugger Field.
