CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Independence announced on Tuesday the club had signed experienced defender James Kiffe. Last season, Kiffe played every regular season minute for Sacramento Republic FC, and received USL All-League Second Team honors.

“He's a very experienced defender,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He's a guy that has big-game experience, as we head into the stretch run. He's been an All-League defender previously, so it's a good opportunity for us to bring in a guy with experience at this point in the season. ”

The Santa Barbara, Calif. native signed his first professional contract for eventual USL Cup-winning side Republic FC in 2014, starting the final four regular-season matches and all three playoff games. Kiffe provided two assists in the 2014 USL Cup Playoffs, including the service for the final goal in the 2014 USL Cup.

Following a stellar 2017 season in which he led the team with 61 key passes and 64 interceptions, Kiffe was named to the All-League Second Team. In total, Kiffe has recorded 96 regular-season appearances and 8,136 minutes of action, with 13 assists and one goal in his four seasons with Republic FC. Most recently, the 29-year-old recorded seven starts for Reno 1868 FC earlier this season.
